Synchronous Retreat of Southeast Greenland's Peripheral Glaciers

چکیده
Recently, scientific attention has focused on estimating Greenland's dynamic mass loss through changes to flow speeds, thickness, and length its marine outlet glaciers. For the ice sheet glaciers, been found be highly sensitive in climate individual glacier geometry. ice-sheet-independent glaciers around periphery, is presently overlooked. Here, we apply an open-source, automated method of measuring using satellite imagery, produce detailed records for 135 peripheral southeast Greenland. We find evidence anomalous retreat across 56 coincident with elevated surface melt 2016, 22% above 2013–2019 average. Our observations resolve widespread, rapid, synchronous response these independent increased meltwater input indicating that their dynamics may more atmospheric warming than currently thought.

The retreat of glaciers in response to recent climate warming in western China
Glaciers in China are primarily located in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and surrounding high mountains. The Chinese Glacier Inventory indicates that there are 46 377 glaciers in western China. Meteorological records indicate that air temperature in western China has risen by 0.28C per decade since 1951, and 1998 was the warmest year; precipitation in the region increased by 5–10% per decade from 19...
متن کاملHasty retreat of glaciers in northern Patagonia from 1985 to 2011
Mapping changes in glacier extent from repeat optical satellite data has revealed widespread glacier decline in nearly all regions of the world over the past few decades. While numerous studies have documented the changes of the outlet glaciers of the Northern and Southern Patagonia Icefields (NPI/SPI), information about glacier changes in the Patagonian Andes (to the north of the NPI) is much ...
متن کاملFlotation and retreat of a lake-calving terminus, Mendenhall Glacier, southeast Alaska, USA
Mendenhall Glacier is a lake-calving glacier in southeastern Alaska, USA, that is experiencing substantial thinning and increasingly rapid recession. Long-term mass wastage linked to climatic trends is responsible for thinning of the lower glacier and leaving the terminus vulnerable to buoyancy-driven calving and accelerated retreat. Bedrock topography has played a major role in stabilizing the...
متن کاملKilimanjaro Glaciers: Recent areal extent from satellite data and new interpretation of observed 20th century retreat rates
[1] Recent and long term variations in ice extent on Kilimanjaro are investigated in the context of 20th century climate change in East Africa. Quickbird satellite data show that the areal extent of glaciers on Kilimanjaro is 2.51 km in February 2003. To assess glacier retreat on Kilimanjaro two glacier systems are identified: (1) plateau ( 5700 m) and (2) slope (<5700 m). Vertical wall retreat...
متن کاملAsynchronous behavior of outlet glaciers feeding Godthåbsfjord (Nuup Kangerlua) and the triggering of Narsap Sermia’s retreat in SW Greenland
We assess ice loss and velocity changes between 1985 and 2014 of three tidewater and fiveland terminating glaciers in Godthåbsfjord (Nuup Kangerlua), Greenland. Glacier thinning accounted for 43.8 ± 0.2 km of ice loss, equivalent to 0.10 mm eustatic sea-level rise. An additional 3.5 ± 0.3 km was lost to the calving retreats of Kangiata Nunaata Sermia (KNS) and Narsap Sermia (NS), two tidewater ...
